WWYD?

I've been seeing all kinds of great furniture transformations around blogland lately. Just a little paint can do so much. I've ohhed and ahhed over this record player, this hutch, and pretty much everything in this post.

So anyway, I'm thinking about painting our TV stand. I got it a little over a year ago for $5 at a rummage sale. I really want to add some color in here since all our walls are white and there's nothing I can do about that. Here is what it looks like now

It kinda, sorta matches the other woods we have in the living room.
So questions I have are:
Would it look stupid if we had one painted piece?
How exactly do I go about painting it? (I'd have to do it inside because it's too cold to paint outside now. So... no spray painting.)
What kind of paint do I use that would go over the shiny finish and stick? (Again, painting inside so I don't want to do a lot of sanding or use a stripper.)
.
I'm a little nervous to paint it. Normally I wouldn't be, especially since it was only $5. But, with Christmas coming up I don't have a lot of extra funds so if I screw it up, we'd be stuck with an ugly TV stand.
What would you do?

I don't think it would look stupid at all to paint it. I think the painted look, even if it is only a piece or two look great!

The hard thing is taking the jump and actually doing it. Good Luck!

I think one painted piece would be beautiful. I would probably paint it black. Do a coat of high adhesive primer (like Benjamin Moore Fresh Start) ... then a couple coats of black. I do a light sanding between coats so it is baby bum smooth and then cop with a satin varathane so there is not too much shine. It's easy ... GO FOR IT!

omg love it, it's got good bones. You buy a can of spraypaint from wherever (Walmart), Krylon works. In your favorite color cherry red-navy blue-pretty pink-apple green-whatever-and you spray spray spray until it's covered.

Post pics!

I'm going to be odd man out here and say, "Leave it alone." It's beautiful and it matches the others. What I might suggest is adding a touch of stain in a pattern. Antiquing it if you will. I'll take a pic of a piece of my furniture to show you what I mean. It'll add color and a bit of whimsy. Don't let me forget to send you that pic.

I'm gonna say leave it alone too. That's probably only because I'm scared to paint anything. haha. I love the color it is now. That's a great steal too!

However, if you want to paint, I say go for it. I think the trend is now to have different colored furniture/wood. I think it would look great!
