A "Not From Scratch" Kind of Day

We got more snow today (booo!!) so I decided to bake when I got home from work. I made some lemon cupcakes (from a box) with fluffy white frosting (from a can). I baked the first batch like I normally would....I preheated the oven to 325 then tossed the pan in. I let the bake for 21 minutes then pulled them out. This is how my cupcakes have always come out of the oven...flat topped. Then I remembered a little tip I read (I think it was on Bakerella). So I turned my oven up to 425. Once it was preheated I threw the pan in, let it bake for 5 minutes, then turned the oven back down to 325. I think I let them bake for another another 8 minutes when I opened the oven door to check on them and noticed they were a deep golden brown so I took them out. Luckily they weren't burnt but they did have a nice little peak on top of each cupcake. These little cupcakes are so much cuter than the flat tops! Maybe ya all already knew this little tip but it was the first time I tried it and it worked like a charm!

On a totally unrelated note, I have to share my awesome find from last weekend. I went to a local florist shop and found these bird plates for 80% off. There were orginally $17 a piece and I got them for $3.40 a piece. Love great deals!!

I love the plates! I think birds are so cute! And since I'm not that experienced of a baker, I did not know the tip you gave. Most times I figure if it tastes good I don't worry about what it looks like...unless someone other than my husband is seeing it! ha But I'll have to remember that next time I send cupcakes to work!

I love that plate! Mine are always flat too...I had never heard of that before so I will try it the next time I bake up some cupcakes.

I love the cupcakes. They turned out cute. I am glad you shared that tip...in case I ever bake any! :) I'm not a baker, but I do have a thing for cupcakes! I'm cheating for Boyd's birthday and buying already baked sugar cookies and a tube of icing, but I hope to decorate them really cute.

What a steal on the plates! They are so pretty. I never was interested in birds till recently, but I see so many cute bird things now!

I love Bakerella, but I missed that tip. Thank you so much for sharing it! The ones with peaks are so much cuter!

I have never gotten a cupcake to look like yours! Wow! I hope your teeth situation is improving - Josh's brother hadn't been to the dentist in four years and now he needs MAJOR work done. He doesn't like dentists either. Who does?
